Christianity in Retreat

I am tired of seeing the retreat of Christianity. It is sound Christian doctrine that has given us the great freedom and prosperity we enjoy. The United States was founded on sound Christian principles. The foundational principle is that man has a sin nature, and that law and government should be structured to harness man’s selfish nature for the good of society. The Ten Commandments are the foundation of a free nation. They limit and direct man’s behavior in a positive direction for the benefit of all. The proper role of government is to reward good behavior and punish bad behavior. Our government punishes hard work and productivity, and rewards laziness. The foundation stones of a productive society are the commandments “thou shall not bear false witness” and “thou shall not steal”.  When I was criticizing President Obama’s redistribution philosophy, a liberal friend once ask me, “Charlie, what would Jesus say”? I told her I knew exactly what Jesus would say. He would say “thou shall not steal”! If government punishes hard work, and rewards laziness, we will all have less. The Democrat philosophy is that we should cut the pie in equal tiny pieces for all to share. The Republican philosophy is that we should bake more pies.

There is a strange alliance between the liberal left and the Muslim religion. It may be that since both are the enemies of Christianity, that they both believe that, my enemy’s enemy is my friend. However there are several similarities between the two. Both are antichrist in that they both deny that Jesus is God in the flesh of man, and the savior of mankind. They both also hold that their cause should take over the entire world through violent, bloody, revolution. Both want to end freedom of speech so that their doctrine cannot be criticized. Neither can survive in a free marketplace of ideas. They both lack an understanding of the true nature of God. That is, that God wants us to freely choose to love, warship, and serve him because we understand that he loved us while we were in the unlovable state of complete rebellion to him. God does not want to force himself on anyone. Love for him must be a free choice. Both Communism and the Muslim religion want to deny man that choice.

Wisconsin and Unions

Wisconsin and Unions

Wisconsin’s gubernatorial recall election was monumental. I would argue that it was even more important than the presidential election. Wisconsin is not a right to work state and by state law you could not hold a job with a governmental entity without paying union dues. Millions of dollars of those union dues went to finance the political campaigns of Democrat candidates. When Scott Walker and the Republican majority were elected, they passed a law that said union membership is now voluntary. Now if a state employee does not want to finance the campaign of a politician he does not support he does not have to do it. I think you can see why the Democrat party hates this governor. I believe this is a moral issue. A person should not be forced to join a union in order to support his family, it should be voluntary.

Do Something Special for Me

Do Something Special for Me

As I go door to door meeting voters I tell people that I want to make Arkansas business friendly because I believe that is how we bring jobs to Arkansas. I also tell them that I believe we need to return to the Christian values our nation was built on. Most people are receptive to that message. However occasionally I run into someone who tells me that if I want their vote I am going to have to assure them that I will increase the size of the check they receive from the government. I recently picked up the literature of a candidate running for office and the dominant item on the front of the literature is a statement that the candidate will put the people of his district first. As I thought about that statement I wondered what the statement really meant. I believe it can only mean that the politician will bring home the bacon to his district. He will do something special for the people of his district. For years politicians have been buying votes by promising and delivering special benefits to particular individuals or groups. Buying votes with favors is not my compass. I remember President Kennedy’s great speech when he said, “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”  My goal is to do what is right for all the people of the State of Arkansas, and the compass I will use is the Christian principles that were instilled in me by my parents. I have been inspired by governors like Scott Walker of Wisconsin, and Chris Christy of New Jersey. If they can turn around states that were on the brink of collapse, think what we can do in Arkansas if we abandon that time honored practice of buying votes by making government an instrument of theft.

The Blessings of Obamacare

The Blessings of Obamacare

In Sunday school we were discussing miracles. It was noted that we do not hear of many miracles today. Jesus and the apostles healed the sick and it strengthened the faith of the people who know about the healing. Today we have the miracle of modern medicine and many gifted doctors to help bring us good health. Under Obamacare a cost-benefit analysis will be done to determine if health care will be delivered to a particular individual. Since it is the government that will be paying the cost of the care, it is reasonable to assume that the benefit analysis will be to determine how much benefit the delivery of the particular care, to a particular individual, will be to the government. Obamacare is socialized medicine. Think about socialist countries like North Korea, Venezuela, China, and the Soviet Union. The government does not exist to serve the people, the people exist to serve the government, and the powerful men who control the government. Think about a farmer who owns livestock. Will the farmer pay any price to get veterinary treatment for one of his cattle. No! He will do a cost-benefit analysis and make his decision accordingly. It is no different in a socialist dictatorship. If providing the treatment will not enable the patient to recover and serve the government to an extent that will more than pay for the treatment, the treatment will not be provided. This type of analysis will not start immediately, it will be phased in over time so the people are conditioned to accept it. It will not be beneficial for the government to pay for health care for people who are retired. If the retired are denied health care they will die sooner and eliminate another problem for the government; Social Security payments will end for that individual. Remember that when he was a state senator in Illinois Barack Obama voted three times that if a scheduled abortion was unsuccessful and the baby was born alive, that the baby should be killed. The time may come when the only hope available to retired people will be to pray for the miracle of healing. Children, grandchildren, relatives, and friends will see the healing and their faith will increase. We will receive the blessings of Obamacare.

Lawyers as Change Agents

Lawyers as Change Agents

The job of a lawyer is to make the law work to the advantage of his client. In Christ’s day the lawyers were the Pharisees. They took the Ten Commandments and invented loop holes so that the letter of the law could appear to be enforced but the spirit, or intent, of the law could be totally subverted. One example regards the commandment “honor your father and mother”. The Pharisees taught that you could say your property was dedicated to God. Then you could not be required to use it for the benefit of your aged parents. Another example was that when you made a promise, if you swore by the temple you were not bound by your oath, but if you swore by the gold in the temple you were bound by your oath. The lawyers perverted the clear intent of the law and invented traps in the law so that it could be used to violate contracts, and allow false witnesses to testify. The law was used as an instrument of theft. Today Constitutional scholars find that the Constitution does not mean what it clearly says, and that it means what is not stated. The Constitution becomes an evolving thing rather than a rock of stability. Each new court decision makes the law something new and different. The commandment “thou shall not steal” now means, it is acceptable to steal if you can get the government to do it for you. A graduated income tax steals form the rich and gives to the poor. It is alright because it is legal. General Electric, one of the largest corporations in the world, pays no income tax because it has successfully lobbied the government for green tax credits. It is alright to kill your children if the law defines it as abortion rather than murder. It is acceptable for you to create money out of nothing and loan it into existence at interest as long as the government has given you a monopoly to do it. Since the government cannot legislate morality, it must be acceptable for it to legislate immorality.

Public Servants

Public Servants

Jesus set a standard for governmental servants. In Matthew 20 the mother of James and John came to Jesus with her sons, and asked that her sons be granted the privilege of sitting on the right and left hand of Jesus in His kingdom. When the other disciples heard what they had ask they were greatly displeased. Jesus called them together and said, the rulers of the nations lord over there people, but it shall not be so among you. Whoever desires to be in authority must be a servant. Jesus had already shown them this example when he washed their feet, and showed the ultimate act of servant hood as king of all mankind when he died for the sins of all mankind. President George Washington followed that example when he turned down the offer of becoming the King of the United States and that is the example each of us who seek public office should follow.

Our Debt Burdened Economy

Posted By Charlie Fuqua On Thursday, September 20, 2012, 3:09 PM in Charlie Fuqua

Our Debt Burdened Economy

Each American owes over $170,000 in government debt. The interest is compounding just as entitlement spending is skyrocketing. More Americans are reaching the age to collect Social Security, and more and more are added to other entitlement programs. The Fed is holding the interest rate below 1%. What happens if the interest rate goes up even a little? How will we pay the compounding interest and the increased entitlement spending? I hear some say that we could just inflate away the debt by having the government print more money. If we could do that, we would be steeling from everyone who has savings, because the money they have saved would be worth less. The real problem is that the government does not create money and spend it into existence. If it did that, the government would not have a debt. The real problem stems from the fact that the privately owned Fed creates the money and loans it to the government. Then the people are taxed to pay interest on the debt. The only way new money comes into existence is by being loaned into existence at interest. Therefore when new money is created the government and the people just get deeper and deeper in debt. It does not matter what political party is in control, the cycle of endless inflation and recession must continue to accelerate until we change the system.

Arkansas Needs Jobs

Posted By Charlie Fuqua On Thursday, September 20, 2012, 3:08 PM in Charlie Fuqua

Arkansas Needs Jobs

The most important issue facing the upcoming legislative session in Arkansas is jobs. If Arkansas is to compete with states like Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi for jobs we must examine their tax, employment, and regulatory policies and see what they have done to attract businesses and jobs. We must also be innovative to outcompete them to attract jobs to Arkansas. I do not believe that Arkansas should give preferred treatment to any business to attract it to come to Arkansas. Rather, Arkansas should create a business climate that is advantageous for any business to choose to come to Arkansas.

Most people consider lobbyists to be the ultimate evil in government. However, it is the lobbyists that represent particular industries that have the best knowledge as to what changes in the law need to be made to create a more favorable business climate for a particular type of business. We must always be careful not to remove regulations that are necessary to protect the public from fraud and abuse by an industry, but should always be looking for ways to reduce burdensome regulation and make it easier to conduct business in Arkansas.

I invite any suggestions on how to improve the business climate in Arkansas. Please blog on this site or email me at CharlesRFuqua@gmail.com

Give us Independence from Global Warming

Give us Independence from Global Warming

Some state governments are considering legislation designed to combat global warming. I want my position on this issue to be clearly understood. Most of us hold the beliefs we hold due to the experiences we have had, and I am no different. I have a degree in biology and  have and taught, biology, chemistry, and physics. I have also been a research biologist for Monsanto Chemical Company. I worked in plant science. Included in the experimentation we did at Monsanto were plant growth experiments in growth chambers where we could closely regulate and monitor all factors contributing to plant growth. We observed that by slightly changing the CO2 concentration of the atmosphere in the growth chamber we could dramatically enhance plant growth. A look at the photosynthesis equation shows why this is the case.  6CO2+6H2O+ light = C6H12O6+6O2. Said another way, carbon dioxide plus water, in the presence of light, produces glucose and oxygen. This little miracle is done by man’s best friends, plants. Those who claim that we are all going to die due to global warming claim that this is going to happen due to the burning of fossil fuel which produces CO2. However if the concentration of CO2 increases only slightly, plants grow faster and produce more food for mankind and remove the excessive CO2 from the atmosphere and put more oxygen in the atmosphere. It appears that someone more intelligent than man designed a system that is very difficult for us to mess up. I need to repent of my sin of calling what man is doing to destroy the earth “Global Warming”, I believe now the climate fear mongers are afraid that the excess CO2 is going to cause global cooling and so now the proper thing to call this problem is “Climate Change”. We are told that in the last 100 years that the average temperature of the earth has increased by 0.7 degrees. My question is, were there thermometers uniformly scattered all over the earth 100 years ago to measure and record the temperature. More importantly, was there a thermometer 100 years ago that was accurate enough to measure a 0.7 degree change in temperature? I don’t think so. Geologist tell us that all of north America was covered by a glacier at least twice. Is it possible that there have been changes in global temperature through the centuries and man had nothing to do with it? The emails of the leading advocates of “Climate Change” were hacked a year or so ago and it was learned that they were lamenting to each other that the data did not support their hypothesis. Could it be that “Global Warming” is just a hoax designed to tax hard working people out of more of their hard earned money?

The Muslim-Communist Connection and Barak Obama

The Muslim-Communist Connection and Barack Obama

For a governmental and economic system to work it must take into account the basic nature of man. The Bible teaches that man has a sin nature. The system that best harnesses that sin nature to provide the greatest good for the greatest number of people, is a free market system. The two great rival economic systems today are socialism, and a free market. The two great rival religions today are Christianity and the Muslim religion. Thirty-five years ago I went to the Muslim student center at the university and visited with the Muslim students. My goal was to share the Gospel with them. All the Muslim students I met were Indonesian. I found it very interesting that most of them claimed to be Communist. That seemed strange to me because Communism is atheistic. However, through the years I have noticed a strange alliance between Communist and Muslims. Most Muslim nations have socialist dictatorships. Mohamed taught that infidels should be given one chance to confess that Allah is the only god and that Mohamed is his prophet. If they refuse they should be immediately beheaded. Communism teaches that violent revolution should be used to bring about a perfect one world socialistic government. The Muslim religion teaches that there will be a perfect one world government, ruled by the peace of Islam, when all non-believers have been beheaded. If you look at Muslim nations, and communist nations, except for the fact that communist nations are atheistic, you see very little difference. They have economies controlled by the government, and very little freedom. I do not know if Communism is a natural outgrowth of Muslim theology, or if Muslim theology has been perverted to accept Communism. I do know that there is a perversion of Christian theology known as Liberation theology that comes out of Latin America. It teaches that Jesus was a communist. A Chicago minister, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, asserts that his theology, is Liberation theology. We know that Barack Obama spent his formative years in a fundamentalist Muslim school in Indonesia, and that when he moved to Chicago, he attended the church of Reverend Jeremiah Wright for twenty years.  We also know that Barack Obama’s political debut was in the home of William Ayers who was associated with the Weather Underground, a group that tried to bring about a violent communist revolution in the United States in the 1960’s. They placed bombs in police stations and plotted to blow up the Pentagon. We now have a president that has a well documented history with both the Muslim religion and Communism.

Capital Gains Tax

Posted By Charlie Fuqua On Thursday, September 20, 2012, 2:58 PM in Charlie Fuqua

The Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce is advocating that the Arkansas capital gains tax be reduced. Capital gains tax is a tax paid on investments when they are sold. For example, if a stock is bought for $30 and sold for $50 there is a capital gain of $20 and capital gains tax must to be paid on the gain. Capital gains are usually taxed at a lower rate than other income. Some states do not charge a tax on capital gains. There are several reasons for this. As a result of inflation, the sale price might not buy as much as the original purchase price. Therefore the taxpayer would be required to pay tax on a actual loss in buying power. Many times the people who are selling stock are retired people selling their assets as a means of supporting themselves in their old age. If a state has a high capital gains tax, people who own stock will look to move to a state that has no, or very low, capital gains tax. It is beneficial for states to attract people with assets, therefore a reduction in the state capital gains tax is beneficial to a state.

Corporate Income Tax

Posted By Super User On Wednesday, September 19, 2012, 2:58 PM in Charlie Fuqua

We need to tax those evil corporations so that people do not have to pay so much tax. On an emotional level this makes sense. However, if we closely examine what is going on, it makes no sense at all. Those evil corporations provide many of the jobs in our state and nation. Much of the stock in most corporations is held by worker pension funds and other retirement assets. Profits of the corporation are paid to the stockholders. The stockholders must pay income tax on any income they receive from the corporation. If we tax the corporation then the profits are taxed twice. Tax is a cost of doing business. All businesses must pass the expenses of the business on to the consumers of their products. The end result is that corporate income tax just increases the price of goods we all buy. Every business must hold down cost if it is going to compete in the marketplace. If a state or a nation has a high corporate income tax, corporations will move to states and nations that have a lower corporate tax rate. If we are going to be competitive as a state and as a nation we must have lower corporate tax rates that other states and nations.

Legislate Morality

Posted By Super User On Wednesday, September 19, 2012, 2:57 PM in Charlie Fuqua

You cannot legislate morality. I have heard that phrase repeated often throughout my lifetime. It must be true. Lennon, the founder of Russian Communism, said that if you tell a lie loud enough and often enough people will believe it. I recently came across a Christian minister who repeated that phrase to me and expressed that he believed it was true. How have we gotten so confused? Is it immoral to shop lift? If we cannot legislate morality, does that mean we cannot have a law that makes shoplifting illegal? If our laws are not based on moral principles they are of no value. Most laws do in fact legislate morality. If a law does not legislate morality the law is unnecessary. Do we really believe that the God of the Bible is the creator of the universe, and the creator of man? If so, doesn’t it stand to reason that we should look to our creator for moral guidance?

Legalization of Drugs

Posted By Super User On Wednesday, September 19, 2012, 2:46 PM in Charlie Fuqua

There are many in the Democratic Party and a few in the Republican Party who are calling for the legalization of drugs. The argument is that drug use is a victimless crime, and people should be free to do with their bodies whatever they choose. We are all the products of our experiences and as a child protection attorney for over 12 years I believe that drug use is not a victimless crime. Over 90% of the child abuse and neglect cases I have handled have involved methamphetamine abuse. I have handled cases where children were physically abused in unspeakable ways, and where children were sexually abused, and used to make child pornography to get money for their parents to buy drugs. Methamphetamine is so highly addictive, and so radically alters a person’s mental capacity, that the drug users total existence is about getting more drugs. The drug user is more damaging to society than a murder. A murder only kills the person he directly intends to kill. The drug user gets others to use drugs and destroys everyone around them including their own children. The argument is made that alcohol is a mind altering substance and it is legal, so why not legalize all drugs. There are many illegal substances that are more addictive, and alter mental state far more than alcohol. Just because one mind altering substance is legal does not mean that we need more legal mind altering substances. There is no benefit to society in legalizing ever more potent and dangerous substances. There is an old rock and roll song that has the line “marijuana don’t make me lazy, and cocaine don’t make me crazy.” My experience as an attorney handling child abuse cases is that marijuana DOES make people lazy and cocaine DOES make people crazy.
